Professor Sigurjonsson finished a B.Sc. dergree in molecular biolgy from the Univeristy of Iceland in 1998 and a M.Sc. degree in health sciences from the same university in 2001. Professor Sigurjonsson graduated with a PhD in stem cell biology and immunology from the Unversity of Oslo in 2006. Professor Sigurjonsson is the director of research and develpment and stem cell processing at the Blood bank, The Landspitali University Hospital and is an adjunct professor at the School of Helath Sciences University of Iceland. Professor Sigurjonsson is the co-founder and CSO of Platome biotechnolgies.  Professor Sigurjonson is the current president of the Scandinavians Soceity of biomaterials.

Professor Sigurjonsson´s research is within the field of regenertative medicine with a focus on developing methods for ex vivo culture of stem cells for clinical use and the use of tissue engineering and biomaterial sciences for bone development. He also does reasearch with the field of tranfusion medicine with the focus on understanding the formation of storage lesions in platelets and red blood cells and how pathogen redcution may affect those processes.
