Scientific leadership:

1999-present: Founder and scientific director of the Icelandic Centre for Social Research and Analysis (ICSRA), a non-profit research institute focusing on youth research. 

At ICSRA we have established a unique nationwide, annually-updated repository database on various aspects of health and behaviour among school-age children and adolescents that is now being used by a wide range of scholars, as well as policy makers and practitioners who are engaged in work with adolescents in Iceland and numerous cities around Europe.

2004-2009: Founding dean of the School of Health and Education of Reykjavik University.  My vision was to develop a school and associated professional preparation programs that linked health and education in an innovative way, building on my past experiences and research endeavours. 

2007-2009: Special assistant to the Minister of Health in Iceland and to the Icelandic Public Health Institute, advising both entities on youth education and youth research and on evidence-based health promotion planning and policy.

 

Key PI projects:

PI for the research component of the Youth in Europe Project, an international project carried out in cooperation with capitals, cities and states in Europe, based on key learnings from the Youth in Iceland project (2005 – present). A cross-sectional survey is carried out every other year (2006-2016) among adolescents in 15 European cities. 

PI of Youth in Iceland, a cross-sectional population based study carried out on a yearly basis among young people between 10 and 20 years of age in Iceland (1999 – present). 

PI of an interdisciplinary group of scholars in the US and Europe, which is developing a longitudinal, bio-social study of Icelandic children, called LIFECOURSE (2009 – present).

Scientific leadership:

1999-present: Founder and scientific director of the Icelandic Centre for Social Research and Analysis (ICSRA), a non-profit research institute focusing on youth research. 

At ICSRA we have established a unique nationwide, annually-updated repository database on various aspects of health and behaviour among school-age children and adolescents that is now being used by a wide range of scholars, as well as policy makers and practitioners who are engaged in work with adolescents in Iceland and numerous cities around Europe.

2004-2009: Founding dean of the School of Health and Education of Reykjavik University.  My vision was to develop a school and associated professional preparation programs that linked health and education in an innovative way, building on my past experiences and research endeavours. 

2007-2009: Special assistant to the Minister of Health in Iceland and to the Icelandic Public Health Institute, advising both entities on youth education and youth research and on evidence-based health promotion planning and policy.

 

Key PI projects:

PI for the research component of the Youth in Europe Project, an international project carried out in cooperation with capitals, cities and states in Europe, based on key learnings from the Youth in Iceland project (2005 – present). A cross-sectional survey is carried out every other year (2006-2016) among adolescents in 15 European cities. 

PI of Youth in Iceland, a cross-sectional population based study carried out on a yearly basis among young people between 10 and 20 years of age in Iceland (1999 – present). 

PI of an interdisciplinary group of scholars in the US and Europe, which is developing a longitudinal, bio-social study of Icelandic children, called LIFECOURSE (2009 – present).

Rannsóknir

2005 - present   Project director for the research part of the ECAD - Youth in Europe Project. An international project carried out in cooperation with capitals, cities and states in Europe, based on key learnings from the Youth in Iceland project (see below).
The project is evidence based. A cross-sectional survey is carried out at three time points in 2006, 2008 and 2010 among adolescents in 15 European cities. Based on findings from these surveys preventive work against the use and distribution of drugs, will be carried out in the cities.

1999 - present   Founder and CEO of the Icelandic Centre for Social Research and Analysis, a research institute focusing on youth research, science studies and science policy.
Built a nationwide, annually updated, database on various aspects of health and  behaviour among school-age children and adolescents and directed research, based on this database, which is used by local and national government bodies in Iceland in their policy making.

1999 - present   Project director of Youth in Iceland, a cross-sectional populations based study carried out on a yearly basis among young people between 10 and 20 years of age in Iceland.

1996 - 2001   Member of the committee Nordic Youth Research Information (NYRI), under the auspices of the Nordic Council of Ministers. In connection with this, chair of a committee that organised an international conference on youth research held in 
Iceland in June 1998.
