Lýsing
Level of course: Second semester MSc program, postgraduate (MSc, PhD). Type of course: Elective. Prerequisites: Electric power systems: such as T-403-RAFO Power System Simulation (Hermun raforkukerfa), T-867-POSY Power Systems Operation (Rekstur Raforkukerfa) or a similar course in electrical engineering. Recommended Prerequisites: Smart-grids. The main goal of this course is to present the fundamentals of power systems protection and the philosophy of protecting developed electric power systems with smart-grids technologies. The course will include lectures, presentations and class discussions, in addition to individual selected projects on modern protection methods with related applications using selected software or programing. Content: •Introduction to electric power systems. •Causes and types of faults, and importance of protection for energy security. •Principles and components of power system protection using instrument transformers and relays. •Types of protective relays, including over current, differential and distance protection and related zones of protection. •Types of protection schemes for power system components, with a focus on transmission and distribution lines. •Introduction to smart-grids technologies. •Fundamentals of the smart-grids protection •The role of protection system in the development of self-healing smart-grids. •Development trends in Smart-grids protection, including transient-based protection. •Selected applications or case studies, on modern protection methods for smart-grids
Námsmarkmið
Learning outcome: After successful completion of this course, the students should be able to: •Know the basic components of the electric power systems and smart-grids technologies. •Understand the reasons of faults and interruptions how the power system could be protected. •Learn the basic components of protection systems. Analyze the performance of current transformers. •Understand the principles of power system protective relays. •Learn about the primary and backup protection method and zones. •Design the over-current relay setting and coordination, for distribution lines. •Design the impedance relay characteristics, using phase comparator, for transmission lines. •Understand the protection philosophy for protecting smart-grids. •Understand the role of protection systems on self-healing smart-grids and energy security. •Be familiar with the development trends for protecting smart-grids. •Learn more details about individual selected projects on modern protection methods with related applications using selected simulation software.
