Content
In the first part of the course, the origins of the European Union and its main developmental trends are discussed. The institutions of the Union as well as the institutions of the EEA Agreement are also covered. The fundamental aspects of the EEA legal system are thoroughly examined, including direct and indirect legal effects, primacy and state liability. The advisory opinions of the EFTA Court are specifically addressed. In the second part of the course, the fundamental aspects of the internal market of the EU and the EEA are reviewed, especially regarding the free movement of goods and people. Climate legislation rooted in the EEA Agreement is discussed, and students gain insights into standards.
Learning outcome - Objectives
On completion of the course students should: • have gained a good grasp of the basic aspects of Community Law. • have gained familiarity with the Agreement on the European Economic Area. • understand the links between Community Law and Icelandic law through the EEA Agreement.
Course assessment
Group assignment (30%), other assignments (10%) and written final exam (60%).
